Cathay Pacific Beer Is Designed to Taste Better on a Plane

Hong Kong Beer Co. and Cathay Pacific Airways have partnered to create “Betsy Beer” — the world’s first hand-crafted bottled beer designed to taste better in the air, according to the company. Simon Pesch, brewmaster at Hong Kong Beer Co., says that environmental factors such as altitude and cabin pressure can dull our taste buds by up to 30 percent, making food and drinks taste different when travelling on an airplane. “To create a sensory experience and a mouthfeel, we’ve increased carbonation 10 percent higher than for sea-level beer. Higher CO2 levels are known to stimulate flavor receptors on the tongue,” Pesch said. The final product includes Hong Kong-sourced longan fruit (similar to lychee, and also known as “Dragon’s Eye”), and honey sourced from the New Territories in Hong Kong. Through April 30, the beer will be served to first- and business-class passengers flying between Hong Kong and the United Kingdom.

Danny Meyer Is Opening New Restaurants in Washington and New York

Danny Meyer (Shake Shack, Gramercy Tavern) is keeping busy with two new restaurants to add to his culinary roster. Union Square Cafe — which recently reopened in a new location in New York City — is expanding with a second location in the soon-to-be-built Capitol Crossing in Washington, D.C., according to Washingtonian. Union Square Hospitality Group will also be opening a new restaurant in New York's Financial District on the 60th floor of 28 Liberty Street, near the Federal Reserve, with dizzying 360-degree views of the city. The sky-high $30 million project remains unnamed, but Meyer is hoping for an approachable menu and experience. The restaurant will contain the highest ballroom in the city, according to the New York Post.

Pizza Hut Causes Uproar Over ‘Killer’ Deals on Taiwan Massacre Anniversary

Pizza Hut is in hot water over a controversial advertisement published in Taiwan announcing “killer deals” during a long weekend. The unfortunate wording and timing of the deal coincides with the anniversary of what is known as the February 28 Incident, in which — on February 28, 1947 — as many as 50,000 Taiwanese civilians were killed in a bloody rebellion against the tyrannical Republic of China government. The five-day weekend has been officially designated as 228 Peace Memorial Day since 1955, when the violent incident was finally recognized by the Taiwanese government. The advertisement in question asks pizza fans if they’re “ready to celebrate 2/28” with some “killer deals.” Pizza Hut has since changed the wording of the pizza advertisement, instead asking customers if they’re “ready for the holiday.”

Lawsuit Claims Police Were Authorized by McDonald’s to Arrest Workers on Strike

A new lawsuit filed by a group representing fast-food workers involved in the “Fight for $15” movement claims that Memphis police were given permission by the McDonald’s Corp. to surveil, harass, and arrest protesters. The group, led by 24-year-old organizer Antonio Blair Cathey, suggests that during several peaceful Fight for $15 protests, strikers were threatened with arrest despite having proper permits. “Plaintiff Cathey was told on multiple occasions by MPD officers that they had ‘authorization from the president of McDonald’s to make arrest[s],’” the lawsuit asserts, according to Courthouse News. McDonald’s has not responded to media requests for comment.

The gallery is set to open this May at the Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace.
